LG is showing, among tons of other fantastic new displays, its new 31″ 3D OLED TV.

“For a peek at the future of Home Entertainment, LG will be displaying its revolutionary OLED TVs at IFA, including a new 31-inch 3D model with a depth of just 0.29 cm, the slimmest of any comparable set in the world. Dispensing with back-screen lighting, OLED TVs’ pixels generate their own light to produce an entirely new level of color, clarity and depth of blacks. Pencil-thin and exceptionally light, LG’s OLED TVs are an elegant addition to practically any environment and surface, as the ceiling-mounted sets in the LG OLED zone at IFA can attest. Demonstrating the extraordinary possibilities for 3D on an OLED TV, the 31-inch 3D model seduces viewers into a world with a level of detail that is a wonder to behold. ”

A couple of updates on two OLED TV models from LG.

First, according to LG USA, the LG 15EL9500 will not be released in the U.S. in the near future. I don’t have any more details than that at this time. The much rumored Summer 2010 launch is apparently off.

Secondly, LG will be showing a new 31″ OLED TV at IFA 2010 in Berlin, starting September 3. No details are available on this new model but once again, it’s probably just a demo model that won’t be available anytime soon at any cost. That’s not to say that it won’t be a stunning piece of display technology to drool over. You just can’t buy one yet.

Perhaps LG will have more news on its OLED plans at IFA 2010

The LG 15EL9500 OLED TV has been available in the UK for a few months now. However, the widely anticipated summer 2010 launch in North America seems to be slipping away. With the demise of the Sony XEL-1 and no replacements in sight, this leaves consumers in North America with no OLED TVs to choose from.

The LG USA and LG Canada sites have no information on the 15EL9500 unlike the UK site – LG OLED TV

I’ve contacted LG to see if I can get an update on the status of the 15EL9500. Please check back in a couple of weeks to see what’s up.

Dupont announced that they have achieved record performance from printed OLED TV display materials.

“DuPont announced that it has achieved record performance in printed organic light emitting diode OLED displays, sufficient to enable future adoption of OLED television (TV). Using proprietary DuPont Gen 3 solution OLED materials, DuPont has demonstrated for the first time a solution-based manufacturing process in which OLEDs can be printed cost effectively while delivering the necessary performance and lifetime.”

The high cost and complexity of manufacturing OLED TV panels has been the main factor in the slow introduction of OLED TV technology. Dupont has apparently found a way to conquer both of these stumbling blocks.

“OLED displays in portable devices are available in the market today, but the current high-cost of manufacturing with evaporated materials has limited market adoption and constrained OLED manufacturing for larger size displays,” said David Miller, president – DuPont Electronics & Communications. “Now, with DuPont printed OLED materials and process technology, fabrication costs can be significantly reduced, and manufacturing can be scaled to accommodate TV-size displays.”

Full story on Dupont’s OLED TV printing acheivements at: dupont.com

With the order of equipment to produce 5.5G panels, Samsung is expected to be able to produce 30″ and 40″ OLED TV models.

“Samsung SMD will be in full 5.5 generation’s system by the 1st half of 2011 with the completion of orders for 5.5 generation’s evaporator. It is for getting firm stance in mobile display market and in a more robust large-area AMOLED TV market.

The newly adopted 5.5 generation’s evaporator of Samsung SMD can increase the mobile display production volume up to two times, which is currently manufactured by 4 units of 3.5 generation’s evaporator and also can produce 42 inches of AMOLED. It can produce 4 sheets of 30 inches’ AMOLED which is introduced in the exhibition by Samsung SMD recently.”

Looking forward to doing a Samsung OLED TV review.

Despite claims last month that Sony would still continue production of the XEL-1 OLED TV for markets outside Japan, supplies appear to be running thin.

I was inspired to do a quick check after speaking to a salesperson a Sony Style location in Toronto. I asked if the XEL-1 was still available and he replied that it was not.

Online, it seems that those of us in North America looking for the first OLED TV may be out of luck.

Sony USA – Add to Wishlist (for the last few months)

Sony Canada – The product you are looking for could not be located, please check the name and try again.

However, outside North America , your chances are better.

Sony Australia – Still in stock, for $7,000

Sony U.K. – May be available at your local Sony Center

If anyone else has anything to add to this quick survey, please leave a comment below. Thanks.

From the LG Austria press release:

LG Electronics (LG), a leading global supplier and technology leader in consumer electronics, brings to Austria a TV to the latest generation on the market. The only 3mm deep and 15 inches wide 15EL9500 is equipped with the latest OLED technology (Organic Light Emitting Diode) for total television experience of the future. With sharp contrast from 10.000.000:1, a reaction time of 0.001 ms and an extremely low power consumption. This design and high-tech device comes in early May on the Austrian market.

“The OLED technology uses an organic material that can apply to very thin and even flexible surfaces. Therefore, the 15EL9500 is one of the slimmest TVs in our portfolio and is ideal for any trend-setter, “said Reinhard Huebner, Retail Marketing, LG Electronics Austria.
