The latest LG OLED TV, the world’s largest at 55″ will be unveiled at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. LG Display has apparently discovered a less expensive way of producing OLED display panels. Previous OLED TV displays used Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS), which uses amorphous silicon. The LG 55-inch TV is using a technology called Oxide Thin Film Transistor (TFT). LG stated that the Oxide TFT produces the same image quality of high performance LTPS but at a greatly reduced cost.

According to the press release, “The LG Display’s 55-inch OLED TV panel produces high image quality with no after image due to its high reaction velocity, as well as high contrast ratio of over 100,000:1 and wider colour gamut than that produced by LCD panels. LG Display uses White OLED (WOLED). WOLED vertically accumulates red, green, and blue diodes. With white colour light emitting from the diode, it displays screen information through colour layers below the TFT base panel. This leads to a lower error rate, higher productivity, and a clearer Ultra Definition screen via the benefits of small pixels.”

The LG OLED TV at 55″ is a major breakthrough in OLED TV technology and at only 5mm thick, will be a stunning piece of equipment. Make sure to check back in here during CES 2012 from January 10th to the 13th to get the latest LG OLED TV specs, videos, availability and pricing.

According to smarthouse.com.au, both LG and Samsung plan to introduce 55″ OLED TVs in time for the Summer Olympics in London next year.

LG had originally planned to release their 55″ LG OLED TV later in 2012 but with the potential introduction of the Samsung 55″ OLED TV LG has moved their planned date ahead to compete with Samsung.

There was a previous LG OLED TV available in a 15″ screen size, but low production numbers and a high price made it a scarce item, rather like the first Sony OLED TV. However, LG has said that the 55″ model will be available in limited numbers and industry watchers expect a fairly high price for these first decent sized OLED televisions.

Samsung has so far not produced any consumer model OLED TVs and it’s interesting to see a 55″ screen size as potentially their first model released to the public. More details from both manufacturers are expected at CES 2012 in Las Vegas in January.

LG is showing, among tons of other fantastic new displays, its new 31″ 3D OLED TV.

“For a peek at the future of Home Entertainment, LG will be displaying its revolutionary OLED TVs at IFA, including a new 31-inch 3D model with a depth of just 0.29 cm, the slimmest of any comparable set in the world. Dispensing with back-screen lighting, OLED TVs’ pixels generate their own light to produce an entirely new level of color, clarity and depth of blacks. Pencil-thin and exceptionally light, LG’s OLED TVs are an elegant addition to practically any environment and surface, as the ceiling-mounted sets in the LG OLED zone at IFA can attest. Demonstrating the extraordinary possibilities for 3D on an OLED TV, the 31-inch 3D model seduces viewers into a world with a level of detail that is a wonder to behold. ”

Also, check back here in a couple of days for photos from IFA 2010.

However, the widely anticipated summer 2010 launch in North America seems to be slipping away. With the demise of the Sony XEL-1 and no replacements in sight, this leaves consumers in North America with no OLED TVs to choose from.

The LG USA and LG Canada sites have no information on the 15EL9500 unlike the UK site – LG OLED TV
